Cumbria to
Manchester
Day
7
We
set off at 9.30 and had to get to Manchester that day, a
distance of 115m. Apprehensive. The first half of our journey
was pretty good fun, we went through Penrith, and then climbed
through the lakes at the Shap summit, a long way up, and then
totally bombed it down on the other side. Charlie’s speedometer
registered a top speed of 37.9 mph. Not a comfortable speed, but
worth it for a few moments.
After that we hit the midlands. Basically
boring a flat and full of slightly depressing towns. Kendal and
Lancaster were alright but I wasn’t overly impressed by Preston.
We got to Salford and thought we’d made it, but we still had a
long way to go. We were pretty knackered, we only had one front
and one back light between us so we had to do a pantomime horse
effect which wasn’t ideal along the A6 in the fading Mancunian
gloom. But eventually we got to the centre. We both had a pizza
craving, but all the pizza huts shut at 10pm, just before we
arrived. We eventually found an Italian place, Bella Roma, on
Portland Street, very friendly and great food, and we settled in
for the evening. Drank a hell of a lot of beers. My friend Paul,
Manchester resident and our host for the evening, came and
joined us after seeing the Pet Shop Boys, and we went back to
his and had a serious chillout and fell asleep on sofas and the
floor.
Day 8
We took a day off. It was hard to know what to do with ourselves
after 7 days on the road but we spent most of the day having
breakfast and washing. We went to see a film and then to dinner
with a friend in the student district of Fallowfield. We stayed
pretty late and got a taxi back home.
